How can mediation change your life? That always seems to be the question when people hear or even read about meditation. What I think people fail to realize is, that it is an important and easy way to help relieve a lot of overwhelming and disruptive emotions. It is a lot easier than people think. It doesn’t take much and almost anything can be a meditation. It isn’t even something that just Witches and Hippies do either. Anyone can learn to meditate or learn to center themselves.
What is Meditation?
Meditation is the act of contemplation, thought, reflection and centering of one’s thoughts, feelings, and mind.
Some Meditation Techniques:
Sit quietly for 3 minutes: Yes, I know. Three minutes quiet. Closing your eyes, feeling silly the first 10 times while you sit there and reflect on everything.
- The First Minute: Let all of the problems that you have to deal with seep in. It will happen no matter what you do so let it happen. As they come up, imagen that you are writing them on paper, like a list.
- The Second Minute: Picture yourself setting that list on fire. Watch the flames burning those problems as you let them go. Let your mind relax, yes you have things to deal with, yes they can be stressful. But just like that list, you wrote each one will eventually come up and be resolved.
- The Third Minute: Let yourself be contented with knowing that for the next minute no problems have come up and nothing needs resolving.
Disclaimer: Not everyone can or will find comfort in my version of meditation. It is really up to each person. I am so not the only person on the internet who talks about meditation or some techniques to use. So find what works for you. Maybe actually writing the list, then burning it and then telling yourself that all problems are temporary will be more successful for you. Who knows? You do.
Just Breath: Just breath. Focus on the action. The time. The feeling of air filling your lungs. This is simple but effective. It almost reminds me of counting to ten when you’re angry.
Day Dream: One of my favorites is daydreaming. Not normally considered a meditation it is. It lets the person check out for a minute or two. Picture anything that makes you happy. A picnic, a first date, your favorite sports memory, whatever takes up your mind from focusing on one problem.
While not all of these are meditation techniques, they are focusing on techniques. It especially helps when trying to write a paper or ten.
Put your phone on the other side of the room: Seems simple, but it actually is a lot harder to do. Especially when you want to be on Pinterest. Unfortunately putting the phone away from your work area is a good way to focus on the task at hand.
Set a time limit to work: If you want to not have ten billion research papers due at the end of each semester; then set a to-do list with time for scheduled for each one. It is easier said than done especially for parents or busy students. Just try to stick to the allotted time and focus on the task.
Do a little meditation: However you decide to do it, take time for yourself to relax to help you focus on the task.
Here is a great resource about Student Stress and coping techniques:
Meditation in Witchcraft:
Meditation is an important technique in witchcraft, Wicca and pagan beliefs. Most use it as a way to center, focus and tap into magick energy.
The Pentacle: ( the circle and pentagram) is often used in mediation. It is used as a focusing image. Picturing yourself at the top (spirit), How you feel (water), Your thoughts (air), Your actions (fire), your ability to take responsibility (earth).
Crystal Magick: Crystals and Chakras are almost synonymous. Crystals are used in helping center and control the seven chakras. Each Chakra has a color and a domain of the body that it connects to. Mediation and focusing on those Chakras is how energy is connected and controlled. I don’t know much about it but there is plenty of info and I might write in more detail later.
Ritual: Even little rituals, spells and chants can be used as a meditation. In fact meditation, reflection and putting energy into these practices is a requirement.
Can Meditation Save your life?
Yes, often people say think before you act. So often people ignore that sound advice. It doesn’t have to be a full-blown cross-legged meditation, however even counting to ten is considered meditation. It can come in handy when that person in front of you in traffic keeps breaking checking you and you’re already late. It can help when you are dealing with an irate customer convinced that you are completely useless. It can help when you can’t sleep because you are too worried about tomorrow. So yes it can save your life, help you and center your overwhelming feeling.
